FAQ  |  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Why should I choose High Country Taxidermy?

High Country Taxidermy provides a modern professional taxidermy service that is owned and operated by me, Mark Brocker.  I am a well-trained, experienced, professional taxidermist who specialises in game head mounts, in particular sambar deer.

Located in Swifts Creek in the Victorian High Country, my workshop is perfectly situated in prime deer territory, making it easy to drop your cape off while hunting in the area. I offer a service where I can pick up the fresh cape and can even come to you if you're in the high country and cape the deer for you to maximise the chances of a great result.

I pride myself in treating your trophy as I would treat my own.

Q. What animals do you taxidermy?

I specialise in deer with expertise in taxidermy of sambar, hog deer, fallow, red, rusa and chital deer. I also mount pigs, goats, buffalo and scrub bulls.

I also taxidermy small mammals such as foxes, hares, wild dogs etc.

You can find a price guide of the species I work with here.

I do not taxidermy domestic animals like dogs and cats.

I do mount deer in their velvet stage for an additional fee. Feel free to contact me to discuss mounting of deer in velvet.

Q. I am not sure of all the choices involved in mounting my hunted trophies. Can you help?

Yes, I walk through each decision relating to the job with the client. I can help you choose the type of mount, the form to use, and fine tune details of the postionining of the eyes, mouth and ears to ensure that the mount looks its best.

You can browse through the catalogue of form designs available at Australian Taxidermy Supplies.

You can also choose form a variety of form mounts at McKennzie Taxidermy Supplies (US) or Research Mannikins (US).

Q. How long does it take to mount my game trophy?

As each trophy is different, it is difficult to estimate the time it will take to complete. However, to achieve a high quality result it usually takes 3-4 months to mount a game head.

Q. I can't get my trophy mounted anytime soon. What can I do?

Un-tanned skins (also known as 'green skins') can last in the freezer for about 1 year, if stored correctly. Trophies should be wrapped in a damp towel with the face wrapped inside the skin, double bagged in plastic and frozen, to avoid frostbite. Trophies should not be salted then frozen.  If a customer still is unable to mount their trophy, I recommend getting the cape/hide tanned for the meantime and continue the rest of the project when you're able. This will ensure the preservation of the cape/hide.

Q. How much does it cost?

See the attached price guide for estimates of costs. A more detailed quote will be provided when you send me your trophy.

Additional costs may apply for :

  • cape repair e.g. holes, rips or poorly prepared cape/hide

  • damaged antlers
